Types of Pheromones: The 6 Molecules in Every Real Cologne

June 8, 2026 · 9 min read · By Cupids Editorial Team

"Pheromone cologne" is a category, not a molecule. Six different compounds do almost all the work in real fragrances - three male-derived, two female-derived, one shared. Here's what each one signals, what the research shows, and which combinations are worth wearing.

The 6 molecules at a glance

MoleculeSourcePrimary signal
AndrostenoneMale sweatDominance, presence
AndrostadienoneMale sweatMood & attention shift in women
AndrostenolBothApproachability, youthfulness
AndrosteroneMale sweatReliability, protectiveness
CopulinsFemaleElevated male testosterone & attention
EstratetraenolFemaleWarmer perception, mood lift

1. Androstenone - the dominance signal

The most-studied male pheromone. Linked to perceptions of confidence, leadership and physical presence. Solo it reads aggressive - always buffered with androstenol in a good formula. See the deep-dive on androstenone vs copulins.

2. Androstadienone - the connection signal

The "quiet" male pheromone. Wyart et al. (2007, Journal of Neuroscience) showed measurable cortisol and mood shifts in women exposed to it. Responsible for the "intriguing without knowing why" effect.

3. Androstenol - the approachability signal

Light, slightly musky. Used in both men's and women's formulas because it reads friendly rather than intense. The reason a pheromone cologne can be worn in an office without setting off alarms.

4. Androsterone - the reliability signal

A male pheromone associated with perceived dependability and protectiveness rather than raw dominance. Less common in mass-market colognes because the effect is subtler - but it's the molecule that makes a fragrance read "trustworthy" rather than "alpha".

5. Copulins - the female attention signal

Short-chain fatty acids found in female secretions. Documented to elevate testosterone and approach behavior in nearby men. The core molecule in any serious women's pheromone perfume. Full breakdown for women here.

6. Estratetraenol - the warmth signal

Female-derived steroid linked to warmer perception by male observers and a subtle confidence lift in the wearer. Pairs with copulins in women's formulas.

How they stack

Real fragrances combine 3-4 of these, not all 6. The combinations that actually work:

  • Men's daily cologne: androstenone + androstadienone + androstenol. Buffered, all-day wearable, what Cupids Hypnosis 2.0 uses.
  • Men's "trust" cologne: androsterone + androstenol. Softer signal, good for client meetings and family contexts.
  • Women's daily perfume: copulins + estratetraenol + androstenol. Three-molecule stack covers attention, warmth and approachability.
  • Couples stack: both partners wearing their respective formulas - chemistry is sex-specific, not unisex.

What to avoid

  • "Proprietary blend" with no named molecules - usually means homeopathic dosing.
  • Single-molecule formulas - solo androstenone reads aggressive, solo androstadienone reads quiet, solo androstenol reads forgettable. They need each other.
  • Drugstore sprays under $15 - research-grade pheromone material is expensive; the math doesn't work at that price.

Where to go deeper

Bottom line

Six molecules. Three sensible stacks. One simple rule: if the brand can't name what's in the bottle and how much, the dose is decorative. Start with the men's three-molecule stack in Cupids Hypnosis 2.0.
